NORTH Melbourne is almost certain to make a like for like swap ahead of its clash with Melbourne on Sunday, with injured runner Ben Ross set to be replaced by a fellow midfielder.

But just who that will be is yet to be revealed.

“We’ll probably look at bringing another midfielder in whether that’s Matt Riggio, Jess Sinclair or whether Blake Grima comes back in; I imagine it will be one of those guys,” coach Dean Laidley said at Arden St on Thursday.

The Kangaroos have drawn some criticism for their up and down form over the course of the season, but Laidley denied Sunday’s match against lowly Melbourne provided a good chance to lose the unpredictable tag.

“I think that’s been more interstate rather than in Melbourne,” he said of some disappointing performances against lower-placed sides.

“You’d probably have to go back to round one against Essendon when we didn’t perform so well.

"No one knew what the new season was going to hold, but I think our form in Melbourne, apart from that game, has been spot on and we expect that to be the case on Sunday.”

The Roos face a dogfight to play finals this year as one of seven teams in contention for the last four spots in the eight, but Laidley feels his side is in a better position now than it was last year when it played off in a preliminary final.

“You do get judged on wins and losses but I think for the long-term development -- from where we’ve come from last year and how we’ve changed the team -- I think we’re certainly better placed for the long term", he said.

“I think the club’s in a pretty good position right now, we’d like to have won a few more games, but we’ve only got ourselves to blame for that.

“We’ve chosen to go down this path, and we’ll continue to go down this path, which is a bit of a transition phase after reaching the preliminary final last year.”
