CARETAKER captain David Mundy has only had four days to prepare for his new responsibilities, but the 23-year-old believes he's ready to lead Fremantle against Richmond on Sunday night.

And with the defender set to make a more permanent move into the midfield it should be a new-look Mundy that takes to Subiaco Oval for Fremantle's NAB Cup opener.

Last year’s exodus of midfielders and senior players left the club light on the ground in both areas, but Mundy said he was looking forward to the challenge of fulfilling the dual role.

"[Playing in the midfield] is a bit of an adjustment," Mundy said on Saturday.

"I played there a little bit towards the end of last year, which I think helped, and I've got guys like Aaron Sandilands and Matthew Pavlich running through there which is helping me.

"I guess it's a change of role and [having] new personnel around me is going to be good."

Coach Mark Harvey gave Mundy the captaincy news on Tuesday and announced to the group on Wednesday that Michael Johnson, Roger Hayden and Paul Hasleby would also get the chance to lead the side through the pre-season.

Despite the late call-up, Mundy said he was prepared, adding he had already been making an effort to show more leadership around the club.

"I think I've taken a big step in that area already this year”, he said.

"Hopefully that translates into games and during the week through the season.

"It's a big challenge, I think. But taking an extra step up in leadership on game days and doing [media interviews] during the week will help me with my game."

Mundy said he was expecting added pressure from his teammates, particularly the 14 new faces at the club as they look for direction on and off the field.

With the loss of leaders like Peter Bell, Shaun McManus and Josh and Matthew Carr, Mundy said it was important for the next generation of leaders to quickly fill the void.

"That's a big reason behind it. We had a massive [portion] of our leadership group leave the club last year," he said.

"We've got to make the guys up ourselves, with guys like myself and Michael Johnson taking the next step.

"I've had a couple of chats to Pav and a few of the other boys about it, so I'm looking forward to it."

Mundy will lead a young Fremantle side against Richmond, with the initial squad of 29 including 11 players yet to play an AFL game.

No. 3 draft pick Stephen Hill has been guaranteed a game while eight of the side's other first year players will jockey for spots in the final 26.

"There's a whole lot of new guys, new coaches and new tactics," Mundy said. "So we're just going out there to try and play how we want to play this year and give some young guys a bit of exposure.

"There's some other young guys coming through like Matt DeBoer and Clancee Pearce who were rookie picks, but they've been training with us and played in the practice match really well ... It'll be really exciting."
