Ciana Niesner, Luamon Lual, Tunisha Kikoak and Takoda Boltong feature in the 2022 AFL and AFLW Diversity Academies.

The 2022 AFL and AFLW Diversity Academies will gather for a Leadership and Culture Camp on the Sunshine Coast this week.

The Diversity Academies comprise the AFL and AFLW Indigenous Academies and the AFL and AFLW Multicultural Academies. Players who feature in the Multicultural Academies have one parent born outside Australia.

The academies are made up of talented 18-and-under boys and girls footballers. Many players in the academies feature in mainstream state and territory football programs.

Players involved in the Diversity Academies participated in an induction program in Adelaide in July and have since completed monthly online sessions.

The program’s modules are comprised of Leadership, Culture, Health & Wellbeing and Football Skills.

The program concludes with next week’s Leadership and Culture Camp, where players will engage in a host of football, leadership, education, cultural and personal development sessions.

A host of football stars will assist with the running of football skills sessions, including Patrick Ryder, Darcy Vescio and Akec Makur Chuot.

The AFLW Diversity Academy camp will run from Sunday, December 11 to Wednesday, December 14, while the AFL Diversity Academy will run from Wednesday, December 14 through to Saturday, December 17.

AFL National Diversity Talent Manager, Pauly Vandenbergh, said: “The AFL and AFLW Diversity Academies provide a fantastic opportunity for participants to develop both as footballers and people.

“The program features talented young Multicultural and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boys and girls from across the country who are developing wonderful football and life skills, which they can take back to their communities and football clubs.

“We have already seen incredible development within the program participants across the course of the year. It will be a wonderful experience for everyone to come together for the Leadership and Culture Camp, which will bring a memorable close to this year’s program.”

The camp will also include an exhibition match between the AFL Indigenous Academy and the AFL Multicultural Academy on Saturday, December 17. The match will be played at the Maroochydore Sporting Complex.

Jason Williams will head the Indigenous side, with Patrick Ryder and Joel Garner to serve as assistants. Ali Hamad will coach the Multicultural team, assisted by Goy Lok and Reuben William.
