The Australian Football League is mourning the passing of Southport Sharks President Matt Schneider, who has died after a determined battle with bowel cancer.

A leading member of the Gold Coast community across numerous board and public service roles, Schneider joined the Sharks' board in 2020 and took over the Presidency last year, driving the club's long-term vision for its continued position as one of the leading state league clubs in the country, before being diagnosed with his illness late last year.

AFL CEO Gill McLachlan said the game extended its sincere condolences to Samantha and their children Maggie, Louie and Oliver on the loss of Matt, at just 39 years of age.

"Matt lived life to its full, with a huge love for his family and a dedication for the Gold Coast region. Football was privileged and lucky to have him in our game and we offer our deep sympathies to Matt's family and many friends."
