The teams are in for Round 1 of the rebel VFLW campaign.

Trying to pick a winner is going to be an absolute nightmare when the new-look rebel VFLW competition kicks off on Saturday, with no less than 114 players set to line up for new clubs in Round 1.

Some of the teams will be unrecognisable from those that took the field in Round 14 and the finals in 2022, headed by last year’s wooden spooner Western Bulldogs, who will field a staggering 15 recruits in their season opener against Casey Demons at Mars Stadium on Sunday.

And there are some familiar names, with AFLW recruits Kate McCarthy (Hawthorn, St Kilda), Sarah Skinner (Sydney), ruck Jorja Borg (Essendon, Carlton) and Dom Carbone (Hawthorn), plus VFLW talent in Freya Taylor (Port Melbourne) and former Williamstown players Jaimi Paten and Jacinta Reid, which means they can expect to be much more competitive than last year’s horror 0-14 season.

The returning Box Hill Hawks will also look completely different to the Hawthorn team that ran around last year, with 14 new players lining up against reigning premier Essendon, which will field an amazing 11 recruits of their own as it launches its flag defence, at NEC Hangar on Sunday morning.

The Hawks will unveil Geelong goalkicker Maddie Boyd, experienced former Bulldog Amanda Tessari, Carlton AFLW recruit Charlotte Hammans, Hawthorn youngster Emily Everist and established VFLW players Grace Matser, Sophie Locke and Akayla Peterson, while the Bombers have added AFLW first-year players Mia Busch and Zoe Hurrell (Sydney) alongside a young VFLW group including Madison Gray (Port Melbourne), Manaia Huta (Darebin), Jenna Richardson (Hawthorn), Caitlin Sargent (North Melbourne) and Maddi Wilson (Carlton).

Carlton and Port Melbourne will each have 10 new players when they open the season at 2pm on Saturday at Ikon Park as will Geelong in its game against North Melbourne at Deakin University, while Darebin (v Southern Saints) and Casey Demons (v Bulldogs) will be the most settled line-ups with six new players to take the field each.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.
