ALL eyes will be on ETU Stadium on Saturday when this year's predicted No. 1 Draft pick Harley Reid makes his Smithy’s VFL debut in Carlton’s clash against Footscray.

And he won’t be the only one under the microscope, with out-of-contract Blue Tom de Koning to also line up in the VFL if he isn’t selected as the substitute for the AFL team’s trip to Perth after being rested last week, while Matt Cottrell has been named to make his first appearance of the season after a foot injury.

Recruiters have been raving about Tongala youngster Reid, 18, since the middle of last year as he tears up what is now known as the Coates Talent League for the Bendigo Pioneers.

He has averaged 22.3 disposals, 4.3 marks, 4.0 tackles and 6.7 inside-50s in his three games for the Pioneers this season, having won 21.8 possessions and 4.8 marks in 12 games as an underager last year.

Reid isn’t the only high-profile draft fancy debuting this week, with Foster’s Zane Duursma to become the third sibling of his family to reach the level when he runs out for Casey Demons against Box Hill Hawks on what is almost home soil at Wonthaggi on Sunday.

The Hawks and Demons both recruit strongly from Gippsland and a healthy crowd is expected to show up to the VFLW/VFL double header which starts with the women’s match at 11.30am.

Duursma, 17, the younger brother of Port Adelaide’s Xavier and Yasmin, has been under notice for as long as Reid and has averaged 20 disposals, 4.5 marks, 4.5 tackles and 5.5 inside-50s in two games for Gippsland Power this year after winning 15.5 touches and kicking 31 goals in 14 appearances in 2022.

Meanwhile, Richmond has handed a debut to fellow AFL Academy Boys member Nathan Philactides.

Carlton has also named ruckman Alex Mirkov, midfielders Matt Kennedy and Lochie O’Brien, young tall Harry Lemmey and running defender Lachie Cowan, although Kennedy and Cowan are among the AFL emergencies and could be heading to Perth.

The Bulldogs have regained Toby McLean, Mitch Hannan and Buku Khamis after their two-week trip with the AFL team but will lose ruckman Jordan Sweet and Liam Vandermeer to injury, while Hayden Crozier has been rested.

The Hawks and Demons have made 13 changes between them for the trip south, with the premiers regaining captain Mitch White for his first game of the year after a knee injury, plus the experienced Matt Buntine and AFL-listed trio Jake Melksham, Bailey Laurie and Joel Smith after their shock loss to Richmond.

Box Hill gains young guns Cam Mackenzie, Denver Grainger-Barras, Ned Long and Connor Macdonald after they were dropped by Hawthorn, plus Jack Scrimshaw and Henry Hustwaite, with Max Ramsden and Josh Weddle earning AFL debuts and captain Hugh Beasley to miss with concussion.

A host of big names are in for Richmond’s second consecutive showdown against unbeaten opposition, with each of the Tigers and Gold Coast recalling four AFL-listed players.

The Tigers regain Judson Clarke, Rhyan Mansell and Hugo Ralphsmith from the AFL and Biggie Nyuon from injury, while the Suns have selected AFL omission Mac Andrew plus Sam Day and Sam Flanders from injury and Ned Moyle from a rest, with Alex Sexton, Alex Davies and Rory Atkins promoted.

Toby Bedford has been rushed into the GWS Giants’ AFL team after just one week alongside in-form defender Callum Brown, with Josh Fahey returning to the VFL, with the Giants’ opponent Port Melbourne recalling Southport recruit Aidan Fyfe from injury for the rested Harley Bennell.

Southport and Northern Bullants have a debutant each for their game at Fankhauser Reserve on Saturday, with a famous Sharks name in Harry Law replacing the injury Corey Joyce, while Dimboola’s Mitchell Jorgensen will play his first game for a Bullants team riding a wave of confidence from their drought-breaking win and also regaining one of their best players in Jackson Barling.

Coburg sprung a surprise at selection by dropping Ryan Exon for its home game against Geelong on Saturday, with the experienced defender going out alongside Max Kennedy and Max Simpson, with impressive youngster Ben Cameron back from suspension.

The Cats will unveil South Australian draftee Phoenix Foster for his VFL debut, with Tanner Bruhn, Brandan Parfitt, James Willis, Oscar Murdoch and Oisin Mullin also boosting a team that loses Brayden Ham for six to eight weeks with a serious hamstring injury.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will show one weekly game live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7Plus nationally. This week’s game will be Coburg vs Geelong Cats

Casey Radio 97.7FM will broadcast Port Melbourne’s double-header against GWS and Carlton (VFLW) and 3WBC 94.1FM will take the Box Hill Hawks v Casey Demons double-header.
