Richmond and North Melbourne will both welcome back ruckmen from long-term injuries, while Carlton has added eight AFL-listed players for this weekend’s Smithy’s VFL action.
Tristan Xerri famously beat Todd Goldstein to the Kangaroos’ AFL No.1 ruck role in Round 1, only to suffer a serious ankle injury that has seen him miss 13 weeks. He is back for the Roos’ trip to Piranha Park to play Coburg on Sunday.
And Tiger tall Ivan Soldo will make his second comeback of an injury-plagued season when he returns for his side’s must-win clash against Sandringham at Swinburne Centre on Saturday.
Soldo has played just one match at any level this season, in the AFL in Round 8, with a foot injury sidelining him for the past six weeks.
But he will face Tom Campbell on return as one of six changes to the team that convincingly lost the Tiger Tussle to Werribee last week.
Hugo Ralphsmith and Cam Olden are among the inclusions, as is the second son of former star Chris Naish, with Charlie Naish, 18, to make his debut in place of another father-son prospect in Harry Broderick. Ben Miller and Maurice Rioli have been promoted to the AFL team.
The Zebras have been boosted by the returns of Jack Bytel and Jake Lohmann, but Tim Membrey has been rested.
Xerri is set to be joined in North’s team by again dropped veterans Ben Cunnington and Aaron Hall, plus youngsters Blake Drury and Jacob Edwards.
Coburg has two debutants, with Seymour’s Goulburn Valley league best and fairest winner Ben Rigoni breaking through three days before his 22nd birthday and Berwick’s Luke Bailey also winning his first VFL guernsey.
The Lions will be without ex-captain Ryan Exon for personal reasons, Josh Watson to concussion and Josh Kemp to suspension while key midfielder Braedyn Gillard has been omitted.
Southport big man Fraser Thurlow will play his 100th senior game for the Sharks when they meet GWS Giants in a season-defining contest at VAILO Community Centre (Tom Wills Oval) on Saturday.
Thurlow, who turned 30 this month, has played 113 State league games – 99 in black and white – but he will reach his latest milestone without injured trio Jay Lockhart, Jacob Heron and Jay Foon, with young ruckman Riley Bowman among four inclusions.
Thurlow hails from Labrador and the QAFL Tigers have produced another one, with Cooper Anderson, 21, to debut.
The Giants made seven unforced changes to the team that lost badly to North Melbourne last week, with six AFL-listers added including AFL omissions Ryan Angwin, Josh Fahey and Harry Rowston. Giants Academy member Jack Glanvill has been selected for his first game with the Allies having the bye in the U18 Boys AFL National Championships.
Brisbane Lions captain Wylie Buzza plays his 100th State league match when his team attempts to bounce back from its first loss of the year against a rejuvenated Sydney at Brighton Homes Arena.
Buzza has played 92 VFL matches after seven NEAFL appearances for Redland before he was drafted by Geelong and has kicked 105 goals, but his attention will be on trying to get top spot back for the Lions after their defeat to Box Hill Hawks last week.
Jaxon Prior returns from the AFL and James Madden and Shadeau Brain from injury for the home team, with Jaspa Fletcher making his AFL debut and Darcy Fort and Kai Lohmann also promoted.
The Swans broke through for their first win of the year against Sandringham last week and will aim for the upset of the season with four members of the high-flying Allies team – Indhi Kirk, Caiden Cleary and VFL debutants Tye Gander and Max Rider – coming in alongside prolific midfielder Ryan Clarke.
Mid-season draftee Harry Arnold will line up against his old team just two weeks after heading south, with his fellow newcomer Jack Buller rushed up for an AFL debut on Friday night.
Ben Jolley’s chase for the VFL games record is on hold with the 300-game legend ruled out for up to two weeks with a calf injury, meaning he will miss Jason Pongracic’s own 100th game against Footscray at DSV Stadium on Saturday.
Josh Pickess returns for his great mate Pongracic’s big day alongside Mitch Cox from suspension, but Jack McHale will miss with concussion.
Bulldog Nathan Drummond will play his first game for the season after a tough injury run, with Josh Bruce, Arthur Jones and James O’Donnell also named. Mitch Hannan and Tim O’Brien have been to promoted the AFL team.
Werribee has suffered a blow for its game against Carlton, with in-form Bior Malual succumbing to a hamstring injury, allowing Darcy Cassar to earn his first call-up of the season and Cam McLeod his second.
The latest shake up to the Blues’ AFL team creates a similar turnover at VFL level, with George Hewett making a surprise appearance in the State league after a bout of concussion.
He is among eight AFL-listed inclusions, with the others being ball magnets Paddy Dow and Jaxon Binns, forwards Jack Silvagni, Jesse Motlop and Jack Carroll, key defender Lewis Young and the experienced Ed Curnow, who will play his 50th VFL game.
David Cuningham plays his first AFL game in over two years and Lachie Fogarty has also gone up, with Ben Ronke out for a month with a broken hand and Archie Stevens for up to three weeks with a foot injury.
Northern Bullants have called up former Frankston player Tom Kelly to play his first VFL game in five years when they host Gold Coast Suns at Genis Steel Oval on Sunday. Kelly, 25, played six games for the Dolphins late in the 2018 season and has been plying his trade for Mt Eliza in the Mornington Peninsula league.
He joins the welcome returns of Saad El-Hawli and Perry Lewis-Smith for the daunting task of facing the rampaging ladder leaders, with Baker Smith among the outs after receiving a four-match suspension at the tribunal during the week.
The Suns have recalled five AFL-listed players, including Richmond premiership player Brandon Ellis on his return from injury, but they lose Mac Andrew to the AFL and Jed Anderson to injury among four AFL exits.
Geelong ruckman Rhys Stanley returns from injury, while mid-season draft selection Mitch Hardie will be unveiled when the Cats host Frankston at GMHBA Stadium on Friday night to open Round 13 in the Smithy’s VFL.
The Cats also regain midfielders Sam Simpson, Mitch Knevitt and Osca Riccardi, but Brayden Ham will miss with a leg injury.
Frankston’s hopes of an upset victory have taken a triple blow with defenders Ryley Stoddart, Tom Small and Colby Nayna all ruled out with injury for the trip across the bay.
Stoddart is in the midst of a career-best season, averaging 27.2 disposals and 6.4 marks as an intercept and rebounding defender, making his absence with an ankle injury a huge blow. Nayna also has an ankle problem and Small is in concussion protocols.
The Dolphins do have a feelgood story though, with Vermont youngster Lochie Reidy to become their 10th VFL debutant of the season.
Defender Pierce Roseby and fellow New South Wales product Josh Stern also gained recalls, alongside Jai Florent.
All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.
Casey Radio 97.7FM will be taking the Williamstown vs Footscray Bulldogs game as part of their VFL/VFLW double-header coverage at DSV Stadium.
