A review of all the action from Round 7 of the 2025 Smithy’s VFL season.

ESSENDON              3.2   7.3   11.8   16.11 (107)
SYDNEY SWANS     1.4   2.8   2.11   5.12 (42)

ESSENDON climbed to the edge of the top 10 and left Sydney’s season in tatters, breaking a 129-year drought with a 65-point belting of the Swans at Windy Hill on Saturday.

The Bombers hadn’t beaten the Swans in this competition since it was the Same Olds against the Blood Stained Angels at East Melbourne Cricket Ground on June 13, 1896, with Sydney having recorded 59 and 82-point wins at Windy Hill since returning to the league in 2021.

But on this occasion Essendon held sway against a wasteful Swans to lead by nine points entering time on of the second quarter before the traffic flowing in Sydney’s direction hit a road block and the home team banged on three quick goals to break the visitors’ resolve.

Best afield Elijah Tsatas, who racked up up 41 possessions, 10 clearances, five inside 50s, six rebounds and a goal, continued the landslide to open the third term as the home team eventually kicked seven unanswered goals and 12 of the last 15 in a comprehensive showing.

The biggest blight on the Swans’ effort was being out-tackled 73-50 despite having 88 less disposals as they slumped to second last on the ladder at 1-5 and lost in-form skipper Nic Shipley to a hamstring injury.

Tsatas had plenty of mates, with Jayden Laverde dominating off half-back with 10 rebounds on return from suspension, captain Xavier O’Neill (31 disposals at 80 percent efficiency), Matt Foley (28 disposals, nine marks), Vigo Visentini (18 disposals, 28 hitouts, seven tackles) and Tyler Sellers (three goals) all having too much class for Sydney to handle.

Peter Ladhams (23 disposals, eight marks, 17 hitouts, seven clearances), Indhi Kirk (24 disposals, 13 contested), Ben Edwards (25 disposals, seven clearances), Max Geddes and new recruit Cooper Macdonald could hold their heads high for the Swans.

Returning Swan Taylor Adams had 14 disposals (nine contested) in his return from a long-term hamstring injury.

FOOTSCRAY BULLDOGS     2.2   3.6   6.6   12.8 (80)
CASEY DEMONS                  1.3   3.5   7.8    9.8 (62)

FOOTSCRAY needed an eight-goal blitzkrieg either side of three quarter-time to stave off a gutsy challenge from the Casey Demons to win by 18 points at Mission Whitten Oval.

The upstart Demons had seemingly broken a dour first-half arm wrestle open when Tom Fullarton kicked three quick goals and Aidan Johnson added another in a 10-minute burst that turned a one-point half-time deficit into a 26-point lead entering time-on.

However, Lachlan Smith outmuscled Will Verrall from a boundary throw-in and slammed home a goal in the 24th minute and the whole game flipped on its head.

Luke Kennedy and Chan Hargraves cut the margin to single digits turning for home and the Bulldogs kicked five more before Casey scored again - viat two late goals from Paddy Cross that closed the gap to 12 points.

But Billy Crofts put the final exclamation mark on an important win for the home side 32 minutes in to lift Footscray back to fifth spot on the ladder.

Kennedy, the Bulldogs’ final pick in last year’s draft at No.62, starred with three goals from 28 possessions despite spending most of his time down back for eight rebounds, with veteran Taylor Duryea also terrific in defence with 32 disposals, eight marks, eight tackles and seven rebounds.

Anthony Scott and Artie Jones won plenty of the ball, Ryan Gardner and Nick Coffield plucked 25 marks between them, Cooper Craig-Peters won 10 clearances, Hargraves booted four goals and Smith had 39 hitouts.

150-gamer Tom Campbell returned in style from his hamstring injury with 21 disposals, 41 hitouts and 10 clearances for the Demons, giving plenty of chances to Bailey Laurie (27 disposals, 10 inside-50s), Kynan Brown (25 disposals, 10 tackles) and Mitch Hardie (26 disposals, one goal), while Fullarton and Cross finishing with three goals each.

BRISBANE LIONS          3.5   5.10   11.13   13.14 (92)

BRISBANE Lions escaped a danger match against North Melbourne to claim their fifth win of the season with a comfortable 27-point result at Arden Street Oval.

The Kangaroos stunned the Lions by a point in the corresponding game last year but the visitors ensured this game was always under control after kicking three goals to one in the first quarter.

They held the margin at 15 points by half-time and put the game to bed with six goals to two in the third term, getting out by as far as 48 points with the first goal of the last before the Roos fought the game out by kicking the next four majors.

The Lions controlled territory with a 60-35 inside-50 count despite having 12 less disposals and were led by defender Luke Beecken’s 31 disposals and nine marks.

Makeshift ruckman Zane Zakostelsky impressed with 22 touches, six marks, seven clearances and 16 hitouts along with young midfielder Reece Torrent (22 disposals, six inside-50s, two goals), while debutant Jake Fazldeen made a splash with three goals from four kicks.

North Melbourne club debutant Cooper Trembath made a splash in a new role as a key forward after coming through the pathways as an intercept defender, pulling in seven marks and kicking three goals in his second Smithy’s VFL match.

Meanwhile, Zac Fisher used the ball at 92.7 per cent on his way to 26 touches and seven rebounds, Adam Tomlinson returned to action with an assured 25 touches, 10 marks and 11 rebounds, and Will Phillips impressed at the coalface with 13 contested possessions and seven tackles.

SOUTHPORT SHARKS     0.2   3.4     8.8     10.12 (72)
PORT MELBOURNE         3.7   7.10   9.10   10.12 (72)

PORT Melbourne threatened to add a nomination for the upset of the Smithy’s VFL season before being left to rue missed opportunities in a draw with Southport at Fankhauser Reserve.

Despite kick-starting their season with a big win over Northern Bullants the week before, few people outside the Borough gave them a chance of challenge a Sharks team on the rebound from being run down by Williamstown a week earlier.

But the visitors dominated the early going, only to spray 3.7 in building a 23-point lead at quarter-time before finding their radar somewhat to push out to a 37-point lead when young recruit Luca Alessio hit the target in the 12th minute of the second.

Defender Nick Williams snuck forward to kick his first VFL goal in his 33rd match two minutes later and it lit Southport’s fire as the home team started the long and slow climb back.

Still down by 30 at half-time, the Sharks kicked five goals to two in the third term to get within eight points and answered Riley Polkinghorne’s reply with two majors to Hugh Dixon to find themselves two points down at the 14-minute mark of the final term.

A miss by Jacob Dawson and a rushed behind levelled the scores as the strong wind picked up pace, causing havoc and leading to misses from Archi Manton, Max Pescud (out on the full) and Campbell Lake, and it was probably Port which was saved by the bell as Southport charged through the middle of the ground only to be beaten by the siren.

It was Southport’s first draw since May 18, 2008 in a QAFL game against the Suncoast Lions, the former reserves team of the Brisbane Lions, meaning the Sharks had never shared the points in the NEAFL or VFL competitions before Saturday.

Dyson Heppell appears to have settled into his new club and competition, leading the way for the Borough with 35 disposals and six clearances, while Harvey Hooper won 10 clearances and kicked a goal, Tom Hird repelled seven rebounds and Jimmy Miller kicked two goals to go with 11 contested possessions and six clearances to keep his superstar opponent Brayden Crossley honest.

Ball magnets Jacob Dawson and Boyd Woodcock were up to their old tricks, sharing 67 disposals, 18 clearances and 13 inside-50s, while Dixon (three goals), Tai Hayes (two) and Pescud were dangerous in attack, Matt McGuinness and Keegan Gray outstanding in defence and Crossley got first touch on 51 ball-ups to go with 17 touches, seven clearances and a goal.

WERRIBEE                 1.5   2.6   4.7     11.11 (77)
BOX HILL HAWKS     2.2   6.5   10.9   14.9 (93)

BOX HILL Hawks reaffirmed their premiership credentials and left reigning premier Werribee hanging onto its spot in the top 10 with a convincing 16-point win at Avalon Airport Oval, their first win at the venue in 13 years to regain the BeyondBlue Cup.

The Hawks kicked the first two goals but then had to defend stoutly as the new-look Tigers attacked with everything they had but missed their chances by kicking six consecutive behinds, paying the price as the lively Matt Hill kicked two classy goals to set up a 23-point half-time lead for the visitors

Werribee looked like coming to life when Flynn Young and Harry Maguire goalled in the space of two minutes to open the third term but it only plucked a feather from the Hawks’ tail and made them angry as they banged on six goals in a row to put the game well out of reach.

The Tigers showed their spirit to fight back with seven of the last nine goals with some quality football – Box Hill did not taking its foot off the pedal – in a sign they will have a big role to play this year, but it was too little too late.

The Hawks were simply too big and strong in the overall wash-up, with Max Ramsden’s second efforts giving him the upper hand in a good ruck battle against Sam Conway, and draftee Cody Anderson showing plenty inside and out to win 10 contested disposals and eight clearances.

Bodie Ryan (24 disposals, 12 marks, eight rebounds) had a terrific battle with Jack Riding, pulling the Tiger back from 12 first-quarter touches to hold him to 23. Seamus Mitchell exploded in the second half to finish with 29 touches, 11 marks and seven rebounds, Sam Frost shut down Hudson Garoni, keeping him to a solitary late goal that extended his scoring streak to 30 consecutive matches, Hill and Scaife kicked three goals each and Jai Serong provided a strong target across half-forward.

Dom Brew reminded AFL clubs of his credentials as the mid-season draft nears with 35 disposals (18 contested), seven marks, 10 clearances and 10 tackles in a typical gutsy display, while Angus Hicks and Bior Malual linked up well through the middle, Jaelen Pavlidis, Louis Pinnuck and Jesse Clark didn’t stop trying with 33 marks between them in defence and rookie Anthony De Pasquale bobbed up with three goals.

COLLINGWOOD                 6.4   11.7   18.9   23.13 (151)

COLLINGWOOD climbed back into the top six after cruising to a 75-point win over the Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval.

The Magpies conceded the first goal to returning Ants star Will Elliott after just 70 seconds but Riley Mason soon responded and the visitors had the game safely locked away after six goals to two by quarter-time.

Elliott played no further part after his early goal with a hamstring injury, but the Bullants fought hard in the second quarter, adding 4.1 to 5.3 before Collingwood changed gears after half-time to push the final margin beyond 12 goals and inflict a 15th-straight loss on the rebuilding Preston club.

Christian Algeri’s fifth VFL game was his best at the level, yielding 24 possessions, six inside-50s and three goals, with playing-assistant Brady Grey dominant in winning 30 disposals, nine marks, seven inside-50s and a goal and recruit Josh Browne racking up 29 touches.

Cricket convert Wil Parker took 13 marks on his way to 28 touches and Harry Demattia showed his class with 27 and 10 inside-50s, while young gun forwards Charlie West, Riley Mason and Liam Hude nailed four goals each and Harry Mahoney three and returning Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell had 10 possessions and six clearances in restricted game-time after 13 months on the sidelines with a foot injury.

Jean-Luc Velissaris was back to his best for the Bullants after a quiet start to the year to boot three goals from 26 touches and 11 clearances, with in-form pair Paddy Fairlie and Josh Hamilton also impressive and John Jorgensen slotting three goals.

CARLTON               2.4    6.7   8.7   9.11 (65)
SANDRINGHAM     1.5   2.6   5.8   6.11 (47)

CARLTON grabbed its second win of the year to stay in touch with the top 10, leading all the way to defeat Sandringham by 18 points in a low-scoring slog at IKON Park on Saturday night.

The Blues took less than three minutes to get underway through Ashton Moir and the Zebras couldn’t get much closer after the home team added four goals to one in the second term after Liam McMahon goalled on the siren for a 25-point lead at half-time.

Sandringham gave itself some hope as Zak Jones exploded with the first two goals after the break and three for the quarter but Carlton answered every challenge and McMahon’s fourth early in the last term ensured there would be no comeback.

Carlton played a possession game with 421 disposals and 113 marks, led by former AFL captain Sam Docherty’s 38 disposals, 14 marks and 10 rebounds, draftee Ben Camporeale’s 34 touches (15 contested) and Will Hayes’ 31 disposals, five marks, six tackles and a goal, while defenders Billy Wilson and Ethan Phillips pulled in 23 marks between them.

Jones sent a message to the selectors with his three third-quarter goals capping off a 30-possession performance, with draftee Tobie Travaglia also winning 30 touches to go with eight marks, Arie Schoenmaker having eight rebounds among 25 touches and Harry Boyd easily being the best ruckman on the ground with 24 hitouts and a goal.

FRANKSTON     2.1   5.6   8.8     12.13 (85)
COBURG            4.4   6.4   11.5   13.6 (84)

BLAKE O’Leary will never forget his 50th Smithy’s VFL game.

O’Leary nailed a goal after the siren as Frankston came from 20 points down early in the last quarter to steal a one-point win over Coburg in a controversial finish at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night.

The Lions controlled the game from the mid-point of the first term until early in the last and still held a 12-point lead when Jack Andrew won a free kick and 50m penalty in the 26th minute of the last quarter.

But Jackson Voss launched a long-range strike to cut the margin to six and a rushed behind set up a dramatic finish as Frankston drove the ball inside 50 in the dying stages.

Lion Max Kennedy picked up the loose ball and was tackled by O’Leary as he straightened up, the Dolphin pinning the ball to the Lions’ chest with his right hand. To the chagrin of Coburg fans, Kennedy was pinged for holding the ball and the siren went as O’Leary went back to take his shot.

The talented small forward lapping up the pressure and calmly slotted a goal to send the crowd streaming onto the oval in celebration.

Despite Frankston hitting the lead in the first and second quarters, Coburg looked the better team for most of the night as it chased a third straight win for the first time in 10 years.

The Lions looked the goods when they kicked three goals in a row through Kennedy and Mitch Podhajski twice late in the third term, only for the late drama to rip the Lions’ hearts out and keep the never-say-die Dolphins in touch with the top four.

Frankston’s defenders kept it in the contest, with Taine Barlow named best afield and Tom Blamires, Tyson Milne and Voss all prominent, the latter taking nine marks and kicking that crucial goal to go with his 25 disposals. Darby Hipwell was an Energiser bunny in the middle with 23 possessions and 16 tackles while Matt Johnson showed signs of his best with six marks and 3.3.

Joe Furphy and Angus Grant had a great contest in the ruck – Furphy just winning the hitouts 49-48 and the Lion laying seven tackles, with the early loss of Harrison Coe to injury putting more heat on Grant to stand up.

Flynn Gentile was again in everything for Coburg with a game-high 32 disposals, seven clearances, six tackles, eight inside-50s and a goal as the mid-season draft approaches. Joel Trudgeon’s strong form continued with 25 disposals, eight clearances, six tackles and a goal, Podhajski kicked three goals and Kyle Weightman did the same in his first game since Round 1 after a hamstring injury.

GWS GIANTS         3.3   10.5   11.6   16.11 (107)

GWS made it six straight wins to start the season after a seven-goal second quarter led it to a convincing 32-point victory over Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday.

Nobody has got closer to the Giants than Sydney’s 26-point loss in last week’s Derby and their hot form held up as they blew the Cats away with a seven-goal second quarter that set up a 34-point half-time lead.

Geelong worked its way back to 15 points late in the third term but the Giants are humming at the moment and were never likely to be hunted down after Max Gruzewski kicked his fourth goal after the three quarter-time siren.

GWS’s workrate was on show throughout as it won the tackle count 82-50 despite finishing well clear in disposals (+84) and marks (+43).

Louie Montgomery turned in his best VFL performance with 21 disposals and a goal, Marc Sheather continued his strong form with 28 touches, 12 tackles and a goal, Jack Ough cleaned up 13 contested possessions and eight clearances and Wade Derksen starring down back with 13 marks.

Gruzewski’s four goals took him ahead of teammate Nathan Wardius (0.4) into the Frosty Miller Medal lead with 20 majors, with skipper Ryan Hebron proving the ideal wingman with three.

Second-year player George Stevens (24 disposals, eight clearances, one goal) was Geelong’s best, with draftee Patrick Retschko (25 dispoals, seven marks, one goal), Marcus Herbert and Jay Rantall not far behind.

Meanwhile, Tobyn Murray showed signs of returning to his best with two goals and Joe Pike (14 disposals, 30 hitouts, eight clearances) put up a good fight against gun Giant Nick Madden (19 disposals, 41 hitouts, one goal).
