THE WESTERN Bulldogs have been quick to keep AFLW premiership coach Paul Groves on board, giving him a two-year contract extension until the end of the 2020 AFLW season.

Despite leading the Bulldogs to a premiership a month ago, Groves was out of contract and facing a return to the classroom at Salesian College at Chadstone in Melbourne's south-east.

With AFLW primarily a summer program, Groves' new expanded role will see him working with the club's VFLW and VFL sides.

He will support general manager of women's football and VFLW coach Debbie Lee to help develop the new Western Bulldogs VFLW team and will be an assistant coach to VFL side Footscray.

"The last two seasons have been an incredibly rewarding experience watching the girls grow and develop as players and people, and I'm thrilled to be able to continue on this journey," Groves said.

"I'm really looking forward to working closely with Debbie in the VFLW space, and on top of that, to be a part of the Footscray program with (head coach) Steve Grace is exciting."

Director of football Chris Grant said the appointment would strengthen ties between the club's four teams.

"It is very important that our Club's football programs provide an opportunity for staff and players to grow and develop in their roles with us, and the evolution of Paul's role is testament to this," Grant said.

"As a club we're committed to the growth of women's football across all of our programs, AFLW, VFLW and our Next Generation Academy, and a key part of our continued success in that space is ensuring there's strong links between our men's and women's programs.

"Paul's re-appointment and the subsequent broadening of his role is a significant step in that direction."

Groves' reappointment follows Carlton's announcement Daniel Harford would be the club's new AFLW coach.
