Courageous Swan Ben McGlynn is among a host of fresh faces named in the Australian squad that will take on Ireland in the International Rules series, kicking off in Melbourne on October 28.

McGlynn is the only Swans player in the Australian team, but former teammate Tadhg Kennelly is set to line up for the Irish.

Just four players in the squad have international rules experience.

Australia will be looking to retain the Cormac McAnallen Cup after a clean sweep of the series in 2010, courtesy of a seven-point win in Limerick and a three-point victory in Dublin at the Croke Park

Rodney Eade will coach the Australian team, with assistants Wayne Campbell and Andrew McLeod.

Eade said the squad was suited to the hybrid game with an "emphasis around players with particularly strong kicking skills, pace and the ability to move the ball quickly, as well as being able to defend against the well-skilled Irish side".

"To be successful against Irish sides who have an emphasis on a fast-moving forward line and great ball skills, we need to select players who are both quick across the ground and have good foot skills that can adapt to the round ball very quickly," Eade said.

"We have selected well-performed players in the youth bracket of 20-24 year olds around the competition to provide spark and enthusiasm, combined with a proven track record in AFL footy of their running power.

"We will need to use our pace in attack and then have the ability to use our repeat speed and defend just as hard when Ireland has the ball and is attacking our goals."

McGlynn will meet his Australian teammates on Sunday October 23 ahead of a training camp at Torquay.

After a promising, but injury interrupted debut season with the Swans in 2010, McGlynn played all 24 games in 2011. He finished second on the Swans goal kicking table with 30 majors, and finished ninth in the Bob Skilton Medal count.

In his season wrap with sydneyswans.com.au, McGlynn said a lean patch of form led him to taking on a tagging role during the season, where he eclipsed stars such as Geelong’s Joel Selwood.

The first International Rules Test will be held at Etihad Stadium on October 28. The second Test will be held on the Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on Friday November 4.
