BULLDOGS midfielder Daniel Giansiracusa has admitted his side needs to do more to protect star forward Barry Hall.

Hall was reported in Saturday’s win over North Melbourne after retaliating to an afternoon of niggling from Kangaroo defender Scott Thompson.

Giansiracusa said Hall’s teammates had failed in their responsibility to help out Hall, who until now had kept a calm head despite almost every opposition team trying to provoke him this season.

“I was up the other end of the ground but we probably have to do a bit better to help Barry out because there were a few coming at him,” Giansiracusa told BigPond Sports Weekend on Sunday.

“We knew it was going to happen when we recruited Baz and we probably knew it was going to happen with Scott Thompson because that’s his thing. He starts to get into players and stuff like that.”

The final straw for Hall came when Thompson deliberately bumped him as he was trying to tie his shoelace. The end result was a melee with Hall holding Thompson in a firm grip.

“Talking to Baz this morning, he was fine with [Thompson] niggling him but when he was doing his shoelace up that was the end of it and he thought 'I’m going to do something about it here'," Giansiracusa said.

"I thought it was just a wrestle but there have been reports and stuff like that about rough conduct.

“Hopefully it is just a wrestling charge and he gets fined. I think we as players would probably chip in for that one because we love him out there and he can definitely assert his authority with his physicality.”

The Bulldogs have spent much of the past few days in the news after Jason Akermanis’ column in News Limited newspapers that discouraged any gay footballers from publically announcing their sexuality.

Giansiracusa rebuked comments from North Melbourne coach and Akermanis' former Lions teammate, Brad Scott, that the article would alienate him from his teammates.

“We put it down to just being Aker and he has an opinion on things. He’s got a lot of avenues to it with his radio and his articles,” he said.

“We actually spoke about it before the game that he is one of us and he is one of our teammates. We stood by him with what he says. Sometimes we won’t totally agree with what he says and that’s fine, everyone’s entitled to their opinions.

“But once we go out on the ground we stick up for each other and Brad Scott obviously does know about him because they played together. It has caused an interested talking point, hasn’t it?”
