Coming in at number 25 is the elimination final against Melbourne in 1988. Demon Garry Lyon kicked a miraculous goal in the dying minutes to put the Dees in front during West Coast’s first ever finals match.
With just seconds until the final siren, West Coast’s Murray Wrensted had a chance to kick the winning goal with the last kick, but a running shot sailed wide.
Senior coach John Worsfold admits to being heartbroken by Lyon’s snap.
“I do remember Garry Lyon’s snap, putting them in front,” Worsfold said.
“But there was time for us to have one more crack at it, and the last play I was involved in I was on-ball and it was a ball-up. I actually got the clearance out, handballed it, just bashed a handball forward. That was our last roll of the dice and it was probably all I had left in the tank.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t get over the line. We had our chances and it was disappointing, but it gave us that belief that now in finals football we could still match it with the best.”
Inaugural squad member Adrian Barich said he will never forget the pivotal moment.
“I think poor old Murrary Wrensted got sick of people asking him why he never handballed to Ross Glendinning in the goal square and decided to have a shot at goal,” Barich said with a laugh.
“Of course he famously tried to kick the goal, we lost narrowly and missed out on the finals series. Again I had the perfect view, as usual, from the bench!”
