WEST Coast coach John Worsfold has refused to rule out a finals appearance after the Eagles secured their second consecutive win for the first time this season.

The Eagles ground out a 29-point victory against Melbourne on Saturday, which followed an eight-point win over Hawthorn last week.

Saturday's result, combined with an increase in his side's intensity and improvement in ball movement as the game wore on, has Worsfold considering a shot at September.

"I would love to play in the finals and hope we can win enough games to play in the finals," he said.

"The challenge is there for us to do that. We've generally played pretty intense footy this year and a couple of games that we've been below what we expect.

"But we haven't had too many easy wins. They're all pretty hard fought for us at the moment but we'll keep fighting for them."

Worsfold said it was hard to say whether the Eagles' past three wins, the third of which came over Essendon in round four, indicated they were approaching form worthy of a top-eight berth.

However, he said the players' endeavour was good enough to make it a possibility.

"We want to take on all opposition. It's hard to predict. We're rapt; we think our intensity's has been there and in some weeks we've used the ball better and in others, it's dropped away," he said.

"What we've got to do is make sure we keep working and get all those areas more consistent."

Worsfold also said it was important to remain realistic about the development of his players and the fact it was "impossible to fast-track them".

"They're going to develop at a certain pace," he said.

"Playing some AFL football when they're in good form is great for them but they're earning those games. We're not just throwing them in there.

"Working hard on the training track is the key area. They're learning all the time; from the games they play, from their experienced teammates, from playing experienced opposition."

He also said it wasn't as simple as declaring Saturday's win as important because it came over Melbourne's crop of high draft selections.

"The obvious fact is, if we play with the intensity we're asking of the players and take it on, we're more of a chance against the younger teams than we are against the sides that are fighting for this year's flag," he said.

Worsfold said Ashley Hansen was continuing to provide selection pressure while Andrew Embley would be considered for next week's clash with St Kilda after serving his two-match suspension.
