ST KILDA'S preparation for round one took another step in the right direction on Saturday night when the Saints easily accounted for Geelong at Etihad Stadium and a handful of youngsters showed promising signs.

It was difficult to draw too many conclusions from the size of the win given the extent Geelong's undermanned line-up, but defender Jason Blake took plenty of positives away from the match nonetheless.

"They had a few out obviously, but I think our guys were pretty good as well," Blake said.

"The young guys kept ticking off our trademark and really stood up so I thought it was a good result.

"It was great to see Tommy Lynch up forward and Tommy Walsh and Tommy Simpkin down back as well. Nick Heyne moved through the midfield too so to get those types of guys into the mix to get some experience was great.

"I think we've taken a step and improved again this week."

Blake saw plenty of room for improvement, too, with his side's ball movement inside 50 not up to scratch despite the team's dominance.

The win set up a semi-final clash against Essendon next weekend just two weeks after the teams fought out a thrilling draw in the first round of the NAB Cup.

"It's pretty bizarre to play a team twice in such a short period, but we'll look forward to the challenge," Blake said.

"They're a quality side on the up. They move the ball very fast and very efficiently [under James Hird] so it should be a great contest.

"Every time you go out there the intensity increases by five or 10 per cent so I'd expect next week to be red hot in the first quarter especially."
