FREMANTLE fans can breathe a sigh of relief, with No.5 draft pick Adam Cerra extending his contract for two more years.

The young Victorian was the only member of last year's top-10 draftees who didn't put pen to paper before the end of the season, sparking fears he might soon seek a return home.

But Cerra maintained his stance he wouldn't look at extending before his first campaign was over and is now locked away until 2021.

"I went into the season wanting to put all that behind me and just focus on my footy, I knew once the season was over I would sit down and extend my contract," Cerra said.

"Personally, I want to keep improving my game, hopefully get a bit more time in the midfield and learn from Nat Fyfe."

Cerra's re-signing is some welcome good news for the Dockers amid off-season unrest and with star midfielder Lachie Neale being courted by the Lions.

The 18-year-old has slotted into Freo's best side and played every game this year after making his debut in the stirring round two win over Essendon.

He and No.2 pick Andy Brayshaw – who extended to 2021 only weeks after being drafted - shape as key planks in the Dockers' rebuild.

Freo has turned over the list and brought in 22 players since 2016, and intends to add a fourth top-10 selection from the past three drafts this November.

"I’m really excited for the coming years, we are a young group and it was really exciting when we were playing well and I’m sure we will continue to build on that," Cerra said.

"I’ve made a lot of really close friendships here, there was 10 of us drafted last year and I’m close with all those guys.

"We’re a really tight knit group, so I’m excited about the future playing alongside them."

Freo CEO Steve Rosich praised Cerra for a "terrific" debut season, which featured 21 appearances and nearly 14 touches per match.

"What he was able to deliver in his first year of AFL footy was outstanding and he is a really important part of the future growth of our club," Rosich said.

"It is really important that someone of Adam’s character and talent is with us long term as we are focused on bringing our cohort of young players through together.

"He believes in what we are doing and where we are going as a football club … and we very much believe in him."
