All the teams for Round 9 in the Smithy’s VFL.

Northern Bullants’ bid to win a second consecutive game in front of their 1983 premiership heroes has taken a monumental hit with star first-year forward Brandon Ryan copping a three-week suspension for striking.

Ryan, 25, who has been touted as a big AFL Mid-Season Draft contender after kicking 18 goals and averaging five marks in his first seven games since arriving in the VFL this season from Essendon league club Maribyrnong Park.

But he won’t play again before the draft after being found guilty of striking Coburg defender Trent Warren in the first quarter of the Battle of Bell Street last Saturday.

The Bullants have given a debut to another of coach Brodie Holland’s proteges from Caroline Springs, with Max Tessari added to the list this week and rushed into the team.

Frankston, which amazingly has not played at Genis Steel Oval since August 12, 2007, and hasn’t won there since May 22, 1999, has been boosted by the returns of ruckman Nic Minchin and talented youngster Mitch Szybkowski.

Werribee will finally welcome champion midfielder Matt Hanson back into its team to take on undefeated Gold Coast on Saturday.

Hanson, who has played 94 VFL games for the Tigers and won four best-and-fairests, broke his hand against Essendon in Round 21 last year and hasn’t played yet this season after needing a second operation when it didn’t heal as expected.

Former Bullant Jack Boyd has also won a recall, while Jack Riding, also a talented cricketer with Geelong who made a Premier Cricket century last season, will make his debut.

The Suns are virtually back to full strength for its first ever trip to Avalon Airport Oval, with AFL-listed quintet Mabior Chol, James Tsitas, Hewago Oea, Ben Long and Oskar Faulkhead all returning to the team that held off Southport last week, replacing five Academy youngsters.

Richmond has selected defenders Ben Miller and Tylar Young in its team to take on Essendon in the Dreamtime at the G curtain raiser at the MCG on Saturday, with Young Gun Luke Teal also called back into the team, but the pacy Garrett McDonagh has been struck down by a knee injury that will cost him at least two months on the sidelines.

Two Bombers from Strathfieldsaye will live a dream when they make their VFL debuts at the home of football – Jake Moorhead and Callum McCarty – while Matt Guelfi and WA recruit Jack Cleaver also return.

Southport regains Jay Lockhart from injury for its trip to Melbourne to meet Box Hill Hawks, but youngster Ethan Sekac has been ruled out for the season with a neck injury.

The Hawks have bolstered their team with AFL youngsters Finn Maginness and Jai Serong, former captain Damian Mascitti and Young Gun Ethan Stanley all returning and Ryan Maric winning a VFL debut after impressing in those Young Guns games.

They have also named full-forward Fergus Greene and full-back Jack Scrimshaw if they don’t make the final AFL 23, with promoted group Connor Mackenzie, Jacob Koschitzke, James Blanck and Sam Butler, plus hamstrung tall Emerson Jeka missing out.

One of last year’s AFL draft hard luck stories in Finn Emile-Brennan will make his VFL debut for Casey Demons against North Melbourne after just one game back from injury for Mt Eliza, with James Harmes, James Jordan and Dan Turner also recalled as Charlie Spargo returns to the AFL.

The Kangaroos have been crippled by injury, with last week’s hero Callum Coleman-Jones called back into the AFL alongside Aaron Hall, Will Phillips, AFL debutant George Wardlaw and emergency Dan Howe, while Josh Goater (knee) and Nick Hodgson (broken arm) will miss a month.

Star midfielder James Cousins returns from a hamstring injury for Williamstown’s home game against Carlton, replacing Toby Triffett, who has a shoulder problem.

The Blues made a stunning 10 changes after a bye in which it lost narrowly to the AFL Academy, with boom young Northern Knights key forward Nate Caddy to make his VFL debut and AFL players Tom de Koning, Alex Cincotta, Jack Martin, Caleb Marchbank, Josh Honey, Brodie Kemp, Lochie O’Brien and Hudson O’Keefe all recalled, although the first two are AFL emergencies.

They have lost Matt Owies, Matt Cottrell and Jordan Boyd to the AFL, Jack Carroll to injury, star teen Harley Reid to concussion and Jack Lefroy to a hamstring injury.

Jack Bytel, Leo Connolly, Ben Paton and Cooper Sharman return to Sandringham’s team for its trip to GWS, replacing the promoted Jimmy Webster and injured pair Darby Hipwell and Vince Zagari among others.

The Giants lost Jake Riccardi and Kieren Briggs to the AFL team, with Callum Brown, Matthew Flynn and Daniel Lloyd coming the other way, while Lavington youngster Nick Newton makes his debut after impressing in the Young Guns series over the past fortnight.

Tasmanian key forward Jordan Lane finally breaks through for a Port Melbourne VFL debut against Sydney on Saturday night after kicking 16 goals in five games for Geelong club North Shore, with Doncaster’s Kyle Viccars to also play his first game and Oscar Manton, Bryce Milford and Cody Stackelberg also coming in, but ruckman Paul Hunter will miss with injury.

The injury-riddled Swans, who haven’t lost to their former next-door neighbours since 1892 but will start rank underdogs to keep that streak going, will have a giant debutant as 206cm Sydney University ruckman Monty Velthuis takes on former Swan Sam Naismith, with Lachlan McAndrew making his AFL debut, Dylan Stephens also recalled to face North Melbourne and ex-Giant Nick Shipley ruled out for up to six weeks with a hamstring injury.

The Swans have also had VFL-listed pair Toby Alker (shoulder) and Jake Veale (finger) ruled out for the season.

Lions Academy product Elijah Glass will debut for Brisbane Lions against Coburg, which has lost Ryan Sturgess to a hamstring injury and recalled Max Kennedy, Jono Marsh and Daniel Owen.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL and rebel VFLW seasons will be live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will show one weekly game live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7Plus nationally. This week’s game will be Williamstown vs Carlton.

Casey Radio 97.7FM broadcasting Casey Demons vs North Melbourne Kangaroos and 3WBC 94.1FM taking the Box Hill Hawks vs Southport Sharks.
