SUSPECTED hamstring injuries to Hawthorn duo Shaun Burgoyne and Liam Shiels will leave coach Alastair Clarkson with more headaches heading into its clash against North Melbourne.

Trying to fix the problems that saw the Hawks overrun by the Western Bulldogs won't be Clarkson's only issue. Speaking after the loss, he didn't know how severe the pair's concerns were.

It's news that will be particularly unwelcome for the 36-year-old Burgoyne.

The Hawks champion hurt his left hamstring last season twice in three months.

He had previously never dealt with a soft-tissue injury.

Carlton will be ruing the loss of emerging superstar Charlie Curnow with bone bruising in his right knee ahead of winnable games over the next fortnight.

On the whole though, the Blues will likely be thrilled the spearhead didn't suffer a more serious injury.

The immediate opponents for Brendon Bolton's men are the winless Sydney at Marvel Stadium and improving Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium.

The prognosis was brutal for Jack Watts though. His season could be over after his right leg was battered when caught underneath Dale Thomas in a tackle.

Port Adelaide don't know how long the former Demon will be sidelined for yet but with a broken fibula and a partially dislocated ankle requiring surgery, the 28-year-old can expect an extended stint on the sidelines.

His teammate Karl Amon faces scans on Monday to determine how long he will be out for after a medial sprain to his left knee.

Richmond will be without spearhead Jack Riewoldt  (right wrist) for four weeks, adding to the Tigers' woes after they were well beaten by Collingwood last Thursday night.

However, Greater Western Sydney could be without its defensive stalwart Phil Davis when it faces Damien Hardwick's side after he experienced blurred vision after being poked in an eye.

That came after popular defender Lynden Dunn potentially had his career ended after a reoccurrence of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, which he had been returning from through the VFL.

Liam Duggan needs to pass a fitness test for a knee issue to be available for the upcoming Grand Final rematch, but he played out West Coast's big win over GWS.

It was a grim Melbourne debut for Steven May – a groin injury added to the pain after the Dees copped a belting from Geelong.

At the least, he is expected to miss Friday night's crunch clash with Essendon.

There was cause for concern when Adelaide ruckman Sam Jacobs left the field during the Crows' victory over Sydney with a right knee issue, but coach Don Pyke was "pretty hopeful" he would be right to face the Cats on Thursday.

For the Cats, impressive youngster Jack Henry has only five days to overcome a sore hamstring that saw him sit out the second half.

In other injury news:

- Essendon forward Jake Stringer had his right ankle trodden on but returned to the field. Fellow Bomber Andy McGrath was pummelled by St Kilda mature-age draftee Matthew Parker in a fair hit and was winded but also came back out.

- Saints big man Rowan Marshall was limping around late with a right calf issue but played the contest out after having the muscle strapped.

- Dees ball-winner Angus Brayshaw copped a corkie to his left leg but seemed to shake it off, finishing with 33 disposals.

- North Melbourne backman Marley Williams seemed to be in discomfort against Brisbane with an ankle concern while Trent Dumont was a late withdrawal with calf tightness.

- Gold Coast was without George Horlin-Smith, a tight back forcing his absence in the Suns' win over Fremantle. Draftee Jez McLennan (knee) and Corey Ellis (ankle) were hurt in the NEAFL, but the club is optimistic they won't miss much footy.

- Western Bulldogs defender Bailey Williams pulled out of the Hawks clash, with the club saying he was "rested" in round two.
