AFL HOUSE in Melbourne was evacuated on Thursday following what was believed to be a threatening call made to the building.

Staff were told to leave the premises around 12.20pm and were allowed to return about 70 minutes later.

Harbour Esplanade in Docklands was cordoned off by police.

The AFL says there has been 'no reason' given for the threatening call, which turned out to be a hoax.

However, it comes 24 hours after the AFL took a public stance in support of the 'yes' vote in the ongoing same-sex marriage survey.

Victoria Police confirmed it had conducted safety checks at the League’s headquarters.

A police spokesperson told AFL.com.au the evacuation was a precaution.
