The 27-year-old was an unrestricted free agent but was overlooked in the NAB AFL Free Agency Period, which ended last Friday.

The Bulldogs did not make Duryea a free agency offer because they did not want to risk downgrading the second-round compensation pick, No.27 overall, they received for Luke Dahlhaus' move to Geelong.

Sydney also chose not to make Duryea an offer despite having earlier put him through a medical test, as at that time they were focused on wooing Collingwood defender Tom Langdon.

Langdon agreed to remain with the Pies last Saturday night.

The Bulldogs targeted Duryea as they looked to add experience to their young list in the wake of Dahlhaus' departure, Jordan Roughead's looming move to Collingwood, Marcus Adams' possible move to Brisbane and the early retirements of Shane Biggs, Jack Redpath and Clay Smith.

The former Murray Bushranger played 118 games for the Hawks and was a member of the 2014-15 premiership teams.

Drafted with pick No.69 in the 2009 NAB AFL Draft, Duryea did not debut until round three, 2013, but has averaged nearly 20 games a season since.

"We’re excited that Taylor has decided to continue his playing career with the Bulldogs," Bulldogs general manager of list and recruiting Sam Power said.

"As a two-time premiership player, Taylor will bring with him valuable experience. His versatility to play at either end of the ground, as well as his speed and accuracy by foot, are just some of his strengths.

"We can’t wait to see what he can offer our playing group."

Hawthorn general manager of football Graham Wright thanked Duryea for his service.

"Taylor has exemplified Hawthorn’s values and culture across his career and we wish him all the best in his new journey at the Bulldogs," Wright said.

"We want to thank Taylor for his hard work and commitment in his nine years at the Hawks."
