1. Toothless Tiger
If Ty Vickery ends up in front of the Tribunal on Tuesday night, he will be doing so without one of his front teeth. Vickery is likely to face scrutiny for a high bump on Michael Jamison that ended the Carlton defender's night at quarter-time after a 20-minute concussion sub. He caught Jamison unaware when he chose to bump him off the ball and their heads clashed. The AFL softened rules around head clashes ahead of this season, but that is unlikely to help Vickery, who will serve an extra week on top of any suspension due to his bad record. It didn't take long until the tall Tiger was himself walking from the MCG, dazed after a stray elbow from Matthew Kreuzer in a ruck contest crashed into his jaw and dislodged a tooth. It wasn't clear if Vickery was able to locate the tooth, but he was able to return before the end of the term.

2. Howler of the year?
Nick Vlastuin took two marks on Friday night, and he was awarded three. The decision to pay him a mark late in the third quarter when he was the 'man in front', even though he didn't lay a finger on the ball, was baffling. It was described by Melbourne great Garry Lyon as the "howler of the year" on Triple M radio. Carlton big man Matthew Kreuzer flew from behind and appeared to take a superb contested mark that would have led to a set shot from the forward pocket, and possibly the Blues' third straight goal in a brief rally. Overall, the umpires paid 55 free kicks, compared to 15 on Thursday night. The AFL average is 36. It wasn't a great night for the whistle-blowers.

3. Yarran's brain fade
Chris Yarran has a reputation for sparking his team with brilliance, and letting them down with brain fades. In the second quarter on Friday night he gave away a free kick to Trent Cotchin in the middle of the ground. When the ball was thrown to Cotchin and it passed over Yarran, he flicked his hand up to knock it away in a bizarre blunder that gave away a certain 50m penalty, taking Cotchin into scoring range where he converted a set shot. The enigmatic Carlton half-back had just two possessions in the first quarter and three more in the second. He finished with nine touches and one rebound 50.

4. Tigers have a 'Titch' to scratch
There aren't many Tigers more important in 2015 than Shane Edwards, but Damien Hardwick could be without the creative runner for an extended period. Edwards left the ground halfway through the third quarter with a right leg injury, and a brief attempt to run out the injury was aborted quickly. He later left the ground on crutches, leaving Hardwick to fear the worst. In a crucial month that will shape the Tigers' finals push, the loss of Edwards is a significant blow. For the second straight season he has claims as the club's most improved player, taking his average disposals (20.8), inside 50s (3.5) and clearances (4.0) to career highs.

5. Hammer time
Shaun Hampson played his first game for Richmond since round 14 last season, and he came up against an opponent set on running him into the ground. Athletic big man Matthew Kreuzer had the better of their duel early, but Hampson worked his way into the game to finish with 34 hit-outs and eight marks. He took two contested grabs in a show of authority that would have made Hardwick ponder his potential as a fill in for injured forward Ben Griffiths, who will remain sidelined next week. "Kreuzer was running him ragged at the start, he obviously knew that he hadn't played," Hardwick said. "So poor old Shaun had the tongue out … it was a really brave effort by the bloke."
