FREMANTLE half-back Stephen Hill is likely to miss the club's season-opener after scans on Sunday revealed he injured his left quad during the Dockers' one-point win against West Coast on Saturday.

Hill, 29, has managed just 16 games across the past two seasons as persistent quad injuries have kept him from the field.

Dockers football boss Peter Bell said the prognosis of Hill's latest injury would become clearer early in the week after more tests.

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir said after the game that the club would take no risks with the silky-skilled veteran.

"He's a little bit sore. He felt some awareness in his quad and the position we're in we're just no risk," coach Justin Longmuir said after his team's second win of the pre-season, which saw them pile on five unanswered goals during the final term.

"I'm really hopeful. We'll get it scanned, do all the right things, get him to rehab tomorrow and get the physios to have a look at him and hopefully we get some good news."

The Dockers paid a price for the pre-season win, with prized young midfielder Andrew Brayshaw sore but expected to avoid injury after having his foot stomped on late in the clash.

Longmuir said ruckman Sean Darcy would be available for round one after he left the ground in the second quarter with an ankle complaint before returning and playing out the match.

Defender Luke Ryan and midfield recruit James Aish are set to return for the season opener after being rested on Saturday with soreness, while Brandon Matera and Connor Blakely will be "under consideration" after playing with WAFL club Peel Thunder.

"They have missed a lot of the pre-season, so we needed to get minutes into them, and the best way to get minutes into them was giving them a full game at Peel," Longmuir said of the pair's omission.

Longmuir said his players responded in the final quarter on Saturday after drifting away from their preferred style, with the midfield sparking a five-goal run that reeled in a 24-point deficit.

"I put it on the midfield group to straighten us up and get some deeper entries and try and put some pressure on," the coach said.

"I enjoyed what we were doing around the ball and I enjoyed our method, because that's more of the footy we want to play."

Longmuir praised his back six for performing for four quarters and giving the team the opportunity to make a late charge, with Griffin Logue continuing an excellent pre-season by keeping star Eagle Josh Kennedy to one goal.

The coach was also pleased with Cam McCarthy's performance on a wing, finishing with 17 possessions and three inside 50s after dropping away in the third quarter.

West Coast coach Adam Simpson said the Eagles still had questions to answer about their likely round one team, with an intraclub match next Friday to help determine who fills the second ruck spot.

Second-year tall Bailey Williams missed Saturday's clash with hamstring tightness but will have the opportunity to press his claims as Nic Naitanui's support.

Simpson said Jack Darling (cheekbone) would be available for round one, while there were other positions the match committee was yet to settle on.

Jarrod Brander had taken a step forward this pre-season, Simpson said, finishing with 17 possessions and five marks in an improved performance after moving from a key forward role to a wing.

"I thought he had some really good and some moments that weren’t so good," the coach said.

"That’s a work in progress, he’s played three games of AFL footy.

"We really like some of the things he does so we’ll have to see how we go with selection in 10 days’ time, have a look who’s around and who’s back, review his game.

"But it’s been a step forward, pre-season has been a good one for him."
