WESTERN Bulldogs forward Jarrad Grant won't start the season on time after fracturing his foot at training.

The 24-year-old, who played eight games in 2013, cracked his left foot on Friday and will wear a moon boot for the next six weeks.

He underwent surgery on Monday to stabilise the foot.

"Jarrad got landed on in a tackle on Friday, and subsequently sustained a fracture to his left foot, which scans later confirmed," club medical services manager Andrew McKenzie said in a statement.

"Jarrad underwent surgery yesterday and is expected to remain in a boot for the next six weeks.

"He will have a review with the surgeon to determine when he will return to play after that time."

Grant started last season in the VFL but broke through in round 16 and played every game after that, kicking bags of three goals against West Coast and the Sydney Swans, and four against Carlton.

He also signed a two-year contract extension in October after some conjecture over his future.

The Bulldogs say Grant is upbeat despite the injury and fact he won't be ready to play when the Bulldogs start their home-and-away season on March 23 against West Coast.

"Jarrad is in relatively good spirits, and is now looking forward to diligently rehabilitating his injury," general manager of football Graham Lowe said.

"It's an unfortunate occurrence, but we're confident Jarrad will bounce back from this setback."

Grant has played 58 games for the Bulldogs since being recruited with pick No.5 overall in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft.
