ST KILDA coach Ross Lyon says the combination between tall forwards Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke will only improve after their combined five-goal effort against Hawthorn on Friday night.

The Saints salvaged a draw after clawing back from seven points late in the final quarter and Lyon said he drew plenty of positives from what he saw from his two tall forwards.

“I thought  Koschitzke and Riewoldt - it was almost the first time they’ve been together [this year] and reasonably fit and healthy. I think it’s only going to get better from there. We walk away pretty rapt with that," he said.

Koschitzke kicked three goals in one of his best games of the season and would have had a chance at a fourth when he was lining up in the third term only to lose the ball because a St Kilda runner was in the attacking 50.

St Kilda runners have conceded several free kicks this season and Lyon, while concise in expressing his frustration, made it clear at the after match press conference.

“Do I address it? My oath I addressed it. Immediately.”

Meanwhile, Lyon expressed his support for the surface at Etihad Stadium despite players regularly slipping over in Friday night’s draw between the Saints and Hawthorn.

Players from both sides had trouble keeping their feet on the surface all night but Lyon said he found no issue with the turf when he walked on it before the game.

“I thought it was immaculate to be honest. There are a lot of trials and tribulations about the surface but I walked out there tonight and it was the best I’ve seen it all year,” Lyon said.

“We haven’t been here for a couple of weeks and you hear the jungle drums beating. But certainly I walked it and I thought ‘Gee whiz, it’s bone dry' and it was consistent."

The Saints play their remaining five home and away games at Etihad Stadium, the ground they have called home since it opened in 2000.

Lyon said he found no pressing issues with the findings from turf experts.

“I haven’t seen the readings, we got them emailed through. Certainly we love playing at Etihad and at the end of the day the show goes on. I haven’t seen a game not played here so it’s not my concern,” he said.
