MELBOURNE youngster Jack Watts, the first player selected in last year's NAB AFL Draft, is set to play for his school football team this weekend.

With Casey Scorpions having a bye this weekend in the VFL, Melbourne has agreed to let its key forward play for Brighton Grammar School this weekend.

Watts made his senior VFL debut for Casey last Saturday against the Coburg Tigers and impressed with three goals, which included an outstanding snap from the boundary, in his side's win. His elevation came after two matches with the Scorpions reserves.

Melbourne football operations general manager Chris Connolly said the decision to allow Watts to play for his school came after consultation from all parties concerned.

"Jack will be playing with Brighton Grammar School [this weekend] and he will be playing as a part of an arrangement made out with (Melbourne coach) Dean (Bailey), Jack and his parents and the school," Connolly told melbournefc.com.au.

"We're confident that he'll be in good hands, with [former Fitzroy and Adelaide coach] Robert Shaw being the coach there."

Connolly said it remains to be seen how often Watts will be able to play school football this year.

"It's a week-to-week proposition in terms of how he's going and what opportunities present," he said.

"Casey Scorpions have the bye, and this school opportunity presents. He's very committed to his school, so it'll be fantastic for the school to have Jack playing there.

"We haven't looked ahead [at how many school matches he will play], it just depends.

"Representing Melbourne at the top level is always a priority for all concerned, and we'll just go week-to-week to see how he's progressing towards achieving that."

Connolly said the Melbourne coaching staff has been pleased with how Watts has progressed with the Scorpions over the past three weeks, particularly on Saturday.

"It was good. We were pleased with his form. He had an outstanding extended pre-season, and his form at Casey has been very good," he said.

"It's been around the mark [of what we expected] and we've been really pleased with aspects of his game.

"I'm sure if he continues to improve and display good form, I'm sure Dean will consider him for the senior team at some stage."
