ST KILDA midfielder Luke Ball says he was probably handed the club captaincy too early in his career.

Ball was appointed club captain at the start of 2006, aged just 21, making him the sixth youngest VFL/AFL captain of all time.

But he says looking back now he was probably not ready for the role.

“At the time it was a fantastic honour and something I’ve learned from. In hindsight I might not have been ready for it back then,” he said.

“I would say there were other factors as well. I was struggling a bit with injury but I wouldn’t say it is as cut and dry as that.

“I’ve learnt from that experience a bit and it has made me a better player.”

Ball captained the Saints for one year as part of Grant Thomas’ rotating captain policy. The following year, with Ross Lyon as coach, Ball shared the duties with Nick Riewoldt and Lenny Hayes before relinquishing the title at the start of 2008.
