AFL Statement

The AFL advises of key updates relating to the fixture for Round 20 following the Queensland Government’s announcement this morning of a three-day lockdown for 11 Local Government Areas in Queensland, including Gold Coast and Brisbane.

As a result, the following decisions have been made relating to games scheduled to be played in Round 20:

- Gold Coast SUNS vs. Melbourne scheduled to be played at Metricon Stadium today has been postponed. The Melbourne Football Club departed Victoria this morning, however, the charter flight will return to Melbourne later today.

- Essendon vs. Sydney Swans scheduled to be played at The Gabba today has been postponed.

- Hawthorn vs. Brisbane Lions will proceed as planned at UTAS Stadium in Launceston at 2:10pm AEST on Sunday, August 1. The Brisbane Lions departed Queensland earlier today as scheduled.

- GWS GIANTS vs. Port Adelaide scheduled to be played at Metricon Stadium at 3:10pm on Sunday, August 1 has been postponed.

AFL EGM Clubs and Broadcasting Travis Auld said the league would continue to prioritise the health and safety of those in the game and the wider community.

"The evolving Covid situation in Queensland has seen the state announce a three-day lockdown and, as a result, we have had to postpone three games scheduled to be played in Queensland in Round 20," Mr Auld said.

"These games will be rescheduled to be played at a time to be confirmed.

"While the pandemic will continue to challenge us, the health and safety of those in our game and the wider community remains paramount and we again thank everyone associated with the game for their continued support of the 2021 Toyota AFL Premiership Season."
