All the teams for Round 1 in the rebel VFLW.

Fans heading out to Casey Fields early on Sunday are in for a huge treat with Hawthorn guns Emily Bates and Jasmine Fleming among a host of big names selected to line up for Box Hill Hawks in their rebel VFLW season opener against Casey Demons.

Bates, 28, is one of the AFLW’s most decorated players, having won the competition’s best and fairest, AFLPA MVP and AFLCA Player of the Year awards in 2022 Season 6 to go with a Brisbane Lions premiership in 2021, three All-Australians and five club best and fairests (four Lions, one Hawks) while Fleming, 19, has been a finalist in the AFLW Rising Star in both her completed seasons so far.

They are among 10 AFLW-listed Hawks set to take the field, including former Demons Lucy Wales, Eliza West and Casey Sherriff, while former AFLW players Tamara Luke (now Box Hill captain), Jess Matin and Tess Cattle will also play.

In a huge pointer to their premiership chances, the Hawks still have recruits Liv Barber, Emily Shepherd, Jess Cox and Jess Mourney, plus stars Nic Garner, Grace Matser and Nadia von Bertouch to return.

The Demons look strong as well, with AFLW recruits Lily Johnson and Jemma Rigoni selected, plus former top-level players Sophie Casey, Sarah D’Arcy, Jo Lin and Meg Macdonald.

Darebin will unveil a new-look team as it attempts to break a 21-match losing streak against Williamstown at La Trobe University on Saturday.

The Falcons have named Collingwood 2022 Grand Final players Caitlin Bunker, Katie Lee and Olivia Storer among 12 recruits, with fellow former Magpies Monique De Matteo, Riley Christgoergl and Amy Kane to miss.

The Seagulls also look stronger, with most of their 2023 keys returning plus Carlton recruits Ash Thorneycroft and Chloe Bain among their recruits, although returning ex-Sun Gabby Biedenweg-Webster and former Swan Bridie Kennedy won’t play.

Port Melbourne has named 11 premiership players as it kicks off its title defence against Essendon at NEC Hangar on Saturday morning, with Hardeman medallist Lauren Caruso leading a group that includes Emily Harley, Fed Frew, Jessie Williams, Kaitlyn O’Keefe and Maggie McKellar.

Five of the Borough’s heroes have departed, with new captain Olivia Barton, her predecessor Claire Dyett and Lambert-Pearce medallist Jordan Mifsud, the star recruit, among those on the sidelines as they hand debuts to Richmond draftees Isabel Bacon (pick 13) and Mackenzie Ford (43), as well as Bombers 2022 premiership players Eloise Ashley-Cooper and Bella Clarke.

The Bombers will unveil No.38 draft pick Chloe Adams and a pair of fellow AFLW players in Ash van Loon and Lily-Rose Williamson, but they will be without star signings Sarah Perkins, Bailey Hunt, Sarah Ford, Isabelle Porter and Christina Bernardi as well as Grace Dicker and Jaimee-Lee Morrow.

Carlton has selected nine AFLW-listed players for its trip to meet Geelong’s four, with Maddie Guerin, Ciara Fitzgerald, Keeley Sherar, Keeley Skepper, Brooke Vickers, Mia Austin and Lulu Beatty to front up against Cats Mel Bragg, Abbey McDonald, Gabbi Featherston and Brooke Plummer.

The Blues also handed debuts to No.7 draft pick Lila Keck and No.31 selection Meg Robertson, plus North Melbourne AFLW recruits Hannah Bowey and Sophia McCarthy, basketballer Layla Prince and Swans Academy graduate Asha Turner-Funk.

North Melbourne will start as one of the premiership favourites, with a host of big-name recruits to take their first bow in blue and white against Western Bulldogs at Mission Whitten Oval on Saturday.

The Kangaroos have named former AFLW players Alana Barba, Kate Reynolds, Brooke Sheridan and Renee Tierney along with Collingwood grand finalists Nic Hales, Sarah King, Nyakoat Dojiok, Elisabeth Jackson, Sarah Hosking and Tricia Cowan, ex-Carlton star Maddie Di Cosmo and Bulldog recruits Amanda Ling and Tahlia Meier in a star-studded recruitment list, wit only Annabel Scott and Brooke Slaney out of their best team.

The Bulldogs also look like big improvers this year, with Essendon premiership players Courtney Ugle and Tamsin Crook arriving alongside former AFLW players Renee Saulitis, Imogen Milford and Cassidy Mailer and another star ex-Blue in Millie Klingbeil.

So impressive is the Bulldogs’ line-up that there was no room for VFLW games record holder Mia-Rae Clifford, who was named in the emergencies, while fellow recruits Mia Cowan, Eleanor Cornish, Chloe Leonard and Tannah Hurst, plus former captain Mary Sandral, are also missing.

Collingwood fans searching for some familiar faces for the Magpies’ rebel VFLW season opener against Southern Saints at RSEA Park on Friday night will be hard pressed to find any.

Amazingly the entire 21 players who took the field in last year’s 12-point Grand Final loss to Port Melbourne will not be there when the Magpies take the field, having all headed to other clubs during the off-season.

Marnie Jarvis, who played the first 10 matches last year before succumbing to injury, is the only player still on Collingwood’s rebel VFLW list, while AFLW-listed youngster Charlotte Taylor, who arrived with pick 30 in 2022, is the only other player named for the season opener who was at the club nine months ago.

Jarvis has been named on the wing and Taylor at half-back as the Magpies unveil a completely new outfit for a game where women’s footy takes centre stage by playing after a Smithy’s VFL curtain-raiser between their men’s team and Sandringham.

But that doesn’t mean the Magpies won’t still put out a strong team, with joint Lambert-Pearce medallist Akayla Peterson crossing from Box Hill Hawks and AFLW draftees Lucy Cronin (pick 9, 2023) and Amber Schutte (pick 32, 2023) to make their VFL debuts and 2022 pick 30 Charlotte Taylor to play her first game since a trio of appearances in 2022.

They also have Charli Granville and Lilly Pearce straight off AFLW lists and a host of others with VFLW experience in their 20 recruits, including ex-Saint Jemma Ramsdale.

Southern Saints, for their part, will have three former Collingwood players in their line-up, including Eva Nikolitsas and Georgia Ricardo, who were named second and third best in the Grand Final, with Ricardo returning for her second stint in red, white and black.

They are among eight recruits selected for Round 1, with Chloe Saultry back from a year off after playing 15 games in the 2022 grand final season, while four St Kilda AFLW players will take the field in Nat Plane, Darcy Guttridge, Caitlin Matthews and Ella Friend, plus Deanna Jolliffe, who remains at the club despite losing her list spot.

All matches in the 2024 rebel VFLW season will be live streamed free via the AFL website, AFL Live Official App and VFL App.
