ESSENDON midfielder David Zaharakis would welcome playing football on Good Friday.

The idea has been gathering momentum throughout this week, with some believing this will be the last time the AFL will not have a game scheduled on the religious holiday.

Even AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou, a long-time opponent of fixturing a game on the day, conceded it was "inevitable".

Zaharakis, who was heading along to the Northern Football League's Eltham-Greensborough clash after training on Friday morning, said it made good sense to stage an AFL game on the day.

"I reckon it would be great," he said.

"In the future, it would be awesome to play on Good Friday. It's a special day and to be able to play in front of a big crowd … and to add another one to the calendar would be awesome for a player."

The Bombers went through a light 45-minute session at their training base, with headline inclusions Patrick Ryder, Paul Chapman, Dustin Fletcher and David Myers all looking fit and ready ahead of the club's clash against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night.

Fletcher and Chapman loom as important additions to a Bombers side that was thrashed by Fremantle in the west by 52-points.

Ryder, who has missed the past two games with an ankle injury, greatly enhances Essendon's ability to win the ball out of the middle.

With no recognised ruckman against the Dockers, Aaron Sandilands dished out 45 hit-outs to his onballers.

"The midfielders are happy that Paddy Ryder is back in the side. We can start winning some hit-outs which is great. He's obviously a big asset for us," Zaharakis said.

"You can dictate more to the opposition, whereas last week we were trying to read off (Aaron) Sandilands the whole time.

"It enables the midfield to be proactive around stoppages and win some of our own ball off our own ruckman, so that's great for us."

In more good news for the Bombers, ruckman Tom Bellchambers is set to play his first game back in the VFL in Bendigo on Friday afternoon.

Bellchambers, who had ankle surgery in January, complements a strong ruck division with Ryder and back-up ruckmen Jake Carlisle and Joe Daniher.
