THE AFL has announced the appointment of highly regarded subscription television executive Peter Campbell as general manager of AFL Media.

Campbell, who is Foxtel’s general manager of Victoria and executive in charge of sport, will take up his appointment with the AFL on July 1, 2013, joining the League's executive.

CEO Andrew Demetriou said the AFL was delighted secure Campbell, who was part of the Foxtel team that negotiated AFL subscription television rights and established the Fox Footy Channel.

"He will add to the expertise of our executive team and play a key role in the continued development of AFL Media as an important communications vehicle and commercial asset for the AFL competition in particular and the game in general," Demetriou said.

"His background as a highly regarded executive in subscription television will underpin AFL Media’s existing leadership structure as well as complementing its growing digital media capabilities."

In 2007, Campbell was involved in the acquisition of the 2010 and 2012 broadcast rights for the Vancouver and London Olympic Games with the Nine Network, and in early 2008, the acquisition of the 2010 Commonwealth Games with the Ten Network.

For the broadcast of the London Olympic Games, Foxtel won the 2013 Logie Award for the most outstanding sports broadcast.

Former Football Federation Australia CEO and AFL executive Ben Buckley will replace Campbell at Foxtel.
