TWELVE teams have become six in the closest rebel VFLW season in the competition’s seven-season history, and it is anybody’s guess which four will advance to the semi finals next week.

The only thing that is certain is the top two – Collingwood and Port Melbourne – will have at least one more week after their mouthwatering qualifying final, while we have two elimination finals that could not be more different in their contrast.

One elimination final features two powerful clubs who have been considered premiership favourites, but have cost themselves the double chance with either poor kicking (Box Hill Hawks) or inconsistent form (Essendon).

The other elimination final involves two clubs who have battled away near the bottom of the ladder since their inception but enter July in great form with nine wins in 11 weeks (Williamstown) and three wins in a row (Carlton).

The winner of the Magpies v Borough game keeps its double chance and will be one win from a Grand Final, where they will taking on the highest ranked winner of the two elimination finals.

The loser of the qualifying final will host a knockout semi-final against the other elimination final victor.

All matches in the 2023 rebel VFLW Finals Series will be broadcast live and free on AFL.com.au and the AFL Live Official App. This week's two Sunday games will also be broadcast on Casey Radio.

SUMMARY

These two teams have put on some terrific contests in the past couple of years and have probably been the best two on paper. However, the Hawks’ wastefulness in attack has been a factor in them not beating the Bombers in their past six meetings (3.9, 1.9, 1.1, 4.7, 1.10, 3.9). It also cost them six premiership points in Rounds 11 and 12 and the double chance. It doesn’t make pretty reading and if they repeat that profligacy they won’t be playing in the semi-finals. The Bombers have been unconvincing in the past month, including needing a late rally to overcome the Bulldogs to secure their finals spot last week. They will also need to play better to keep their premiership defence alive. It’s anybody’s game.

SUMMARY

The Borough blew the chance for a home qualifying final by losing to Casey Demons last week but they will still be confident heading to Victoria Park after beating the Magpies by six goals at the start of the season – knowing any remaining games will be on their home patch. It has been a wonderful effort to bounce back after finishing 10th last year. The Magpies slipped to sixth last year after the disappointment of having the 2021 Grand Final abandoned when they were hot favourites to win back-to-back flags and their response to the upset loss to Carlton in Round 12 has shown their quality. Their finals experience could prove the difference in what will be another tight contest.

SUMMARY

Two teams making their finals debut, with one guaranteed to keep the fairytale going, while the other heads to the off-season. The Seagulls are the form team of the competition after winning all four practice matches and then bouncing back from a 0-3 start to sing the song in nine of their past 11 games. Amazingly, those nine wins are half the total victories they have had in their history – they were 9-48-2 after the loss to Port Melbourne on Good Friday. Included in this uprising has been two six-goal wins over Sunday’s opponent in Carlton which ensure they start favourites this time. The Blues hit the elimination final with a full head of steam with three straight wins and Christina Bernardi in red-hot form. Will the confidence of those wins help them, or will the fact the last two were “easy kills” be a negative.
